Background Information

The Technology Student Association hosts competitions annually at The College of New Jersey; one of the competitions is Fashion Design. The 2014 TSA Fashion Design competition prompt is “design two outfits for a NEW children’s fairy tale storybook character.”   My partner Brie and I are each designing one outfit for the same character.  At the TSA competition a live model will wear the outfits we create and model them down a runway.  Together Brie and I choose that our outfits will be designed for the purpose of being worn as an on stage costume if the storybook were to be acted out.

The primary purpose of the outfit is for a model to wear at the TSA competition.  Brie and I chose to design and create the outfits with the purpose of wearing them as an onstage costume in mind. This means that the product will be worn by models or actresses.

Clothing is an integral part of living; clothes are everywhere.  Clothing has the ability to show who someone is without ever saying a word; people use clothing as a way of establishing one’s own identity.  Costumes do the same thing the same thing for fictional characters.  Fictional characters, like Little Red Riding Hood or Cinderella have classic costumes; outfits that are used as an identifier.  A person could look just at a costume and know the fictional character that wears that costume.  Often times fairy tales are brought to life through performances, live performances require costumes for the actors to wear.  Well-designed, theatric and individualized costumes can help the audience differentiate the characters on stage, give the characters a sense of individuality and enhance the overall performance.

The stakeholders involved is anyone that may wear our costumes, anyone involved in producing a performance of the fairy tale, anyone who would view a performance, and any person that may use the costumes in the future as a basis for variations of the costumes for purposes like Halloween costumes or a newer updated costume.

Cinderella Costume

The costume’s mood is intended to be theatrical, whimsical, and expensive.  The costume is intended for a princess character to wear, therefore the costume must look worthy of a royal.  The actual costume is intended to be worn on stage, where spotlights and many eyes will be on the garments.  The costume must be detailed and intricate enough for audience members to be interested in the clothes from anywhere in the audience.

Clothing is worn by everyone; any clothing sold performs a similar function that my garments will, which is to clothe the wearer.  The outfit I am making is intended for a live stage performance and will be modeled at the 2014 TSA competition.  Any costume worn on stage, by a princess character functions very similarly to my outfit.

Brie Phiefer and I are preparing for the 2014 TSA Fashion Design competition.  The competition is to create two outfits for a new fairy tale character; we are each taking on one outfit.  At the competition a model will wear the out fits.  We decided to go beyond the competition prompt, we choose to develop a storyline for a marine themed, educational fairy tale.  The outfits we are creating are for the main character in the fairy tale who is a princess.  As well the purpose of the outfits we are making is to be worn on stage if the fairy tale were ever to be acted out.
